What Does it Mean to Be Humble

image for blog entry

To be humble, to have humility, to have a humbling experience.  It sounds easy and we all say we strive to be this. Biblically we are called to be humble. So why is it so hard for us to admit that we should have this state of mind, let alone try and display this in our daily lives.

I was reminded of this during the week when a client came up to me and said he was going out for wrestling and asked what he needed to do to be good.  I said humility. We have a saying in this sport that “if you don’t have humility be ready to be humbled”, and this can true for everyday life’s experiences.  Maybe that is why wrestlers can handle so much adversity.

I guess the question we need to ask ourselves is what do I need to do to be humble, before I am humiliated?  Like I mentioned earlier wrestlers learn from a good butt whipping on the mat, we take that as “what not to do next time experience” and apply ...

Seven Areas of Self-Care

image for blog entry

As the New Year rolls around, many of us are reflecting on the past year and considering what we want to focus on during this next trip around the sun.  As I’ve spoken with clients and thought about my own goals, the topic of holistic, well-rounded self-care has come up regularly.  Self-care is paying attention to and making good choices for your mind, body, soul, and spirit.  Without being aware of this, we risk falling into complacency, remaining stuck in unhealthy patterns, and hindering our ability to live the kind of story we want to experience.

As you think about what kind of life you want to live this year, it can be helpful to separate the areas of your life into different categories in order to properly assess and plan.  Here are seven common categories of self-car ...

Death’s Doors: Why Does Anyone Want to Die?

image for blog entry

September is Suicide Awareness Month.

Death is a horrible topic. It shouldn’t exist to begin with. Even grieving death hurts deeply. But what happens when you want it, death? When the beauty within yourself turns ugly and all you know is the ashes of broken life?

Logically, we see suicide as the murder of oneself. It goes against common sense. But more than murder, on an emotional and physical level, it’s a soul’s cry of hopeless desperation.

Why would someone want to take their own life?

The reasons are a million and one, but it comes down to this, the world is not as it should be right now. And encounters with that brokenness that has reached the depths of who we are and escaping the pain of that brokenness can be consuming.

Suicide is like a volcano; the very core and foundation holds the danger. When a volcano goes off, the effect is not only the ash and molte ...

Relationships - Part 1

image for blog entry

Relationships can be difficult, especially if we invest a lot of our time and effort into them. When we do this, we create a vested interest and we want to see a return.  We were built for relationships (Genesis 2:18). God formed us in a way that we can have a singular relationship with a person or in a community where we can find support.  When it comes to relationships we are triadic beings: emotional, physical and spiritual.  While all three of these entities are not equally divided up, they do vary in percentages, as we need them to be at any particular moment in time.

The first part of this triadic relationship pattern is our emotions. This seems to take a greater toll on us than we care to admit.   We will talk 24/7 if you let us but trying to get us to express our emotions in a careful and understanding way has us at a great disadvantage.  Men are at a greater disadvantage as we are usual ...
