Revisiting the Map

A sense of direction, purpose, and identity. Most would agree that these are factors contributing to a fulfilling life. At some point most of us have also experienced the anxiety or depression that accompanies a loss of these.

As we attend to the daily concerns of life, we experience the satisfaction and positive emotions that come with caring for family, making progress toward work, financial and health goals etc. At the same time, the immediacy of these concerns can sometimes take almost all of our focus, distracting us from parts of ourselves that may have been buried under the daily routine.

To bring balance, it’s important that we check in with ourselves from time to time to ensure that we are moving forward with internal integration, an awareness of who we are and where we want to go.

Rebuilding Your Island

Recently, I returned from an amazing honeymoon voyage to the Virgin Islands. As our ship docked, we were in breathtaking awe of the pristine clear blue waters and lush tropical hillsides. We were greeted by locals dressed in colorful costumes representing their indigenous culture and dancing to Caribbean music. Quaint shops lined the historic avenues and street vendors displayed their wares with cheerful enthusiasm. One could not help but be taken away on a warm breeze of excitement. Taxi drivers lined the avenues willing to take you on tours of their treasured island for this is the home of THE “Treasure Island” boasting the resting place of much famous pirate booty, ship wrecks, water wonders with many colorful species of coral (who knew “fire coral” is a thing); animals, military forts, historic landmarks, and much tropical horticulture.

What is Your Calling? Your Purpose?


How do you write your work/career story?

What plot or storyline are you going to write and live that will give you real work that is engaging and a career that is meaningful?

The best starting point is to have a clear calling and a compelling WHY.

Think of calling as a pathway for expressing one’s purpose in ways that make the world better.

Calling is the belief that one has been called upon to do a particular kind of work.  It is a pathway for using one’s gifts, skills and abilities with purpose.  Not just for one’s enjoyment and benefit but also for the benefit of others, for the common good.  

Is it a pathway to build or repair? To work for justice?  To bring more beauty or joy into the world? To help others?  To lead or organize? To provide for the common good?  ...
