ADHD in Women

Attention is complicated, and it can be even more complicated when you have attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). This mental health diagnosis has been a buzzword as of late. Recently there has been an increase in diagnosis, especially amongst women. Since ADHD in women has not been as researched in the past as much as men and children, the amount of resources for women who are experiencing ADHD are sparse. However, there has been an increase in awareness within women and ADHD, which I find hopeful. Although some might find it problematic, one of the contributing factors to this awareness has been social media, specifically TikTok.

The TikTok platform has made it easy and convenient to share our experiences. Offering validation for shared experiences and comfort that we are not alone in our struggles. I bring up TikTok specifically because as a counselor I hear about it often and what I have found is there is a lot of shame centered around this.

When I say shame, I mean a feeling of embarrassment by the client for having “discovered'' that they may have ADHD from a TikTok video. How the client came across information that resonated with their day to day functioning is not nearly as important. What is important is that this has now created a starting point for the client. This allows them to articulate their experiences to a helping professional which is a catalyst for diagnosis and treatment.

***I want to note that when obtaining mental health information from a social media platform it is important to consult your doctor and/or therapist about any mental health diagnosis and try to refrain from self-diagnosing. Below I have listed some extra resources that may be helpful.

I so appreciate this much-needed permission to use whatever information comes across our paths to aid in self-discovery and change! I found your observation about shame and embarrassment to be apt, as well as your reframe of viewing this as a "starting point" in a journey, not a destination or a diagnosis. Thanks Kayla!
