My story has been one that has included seasons of deep loneliness, feeling like no one was emotionally available to process unsettling emotions. This created a sense of being different or alienated, like I was often on the outside looking in; longing for deep connection, but unsure if it would be reciprocated or my emotions validated. Not many people would have known that I struggled with inner feelings of alienation and shame, because I hid them well under achievement and "doing the right thing." One of the ways I learned to cope with both shame and situations and people outside of my control was through rigid patterns of eating and harsh self-criticism.  I believed the lie that if I made myself perfect enough, no one could reject me. When I went through my Master's program in Counseling almost 20 years ago, I was given the gift of my own therapy. Sitting with other people who could hold my story well, and lean into ways that I had been both wounded by others, and also done my share of wounding in return. I became emboldened to take an honest look at myself and then use my voice to be both an advocate for myself and others, particularly in the realm of abuse. I am passionate about examining relational dynamics and promoting healthier dynamics in family and couple relationships. After I graduated in 2009,  I practiced in the Seattle area for about two years with adults who had chronic mental illness, as well as adolescents wth eating disorders, and adults who struggled with anxiety, depression, and issues of abuse. Then God had a different path laid out for me, as I had my first child and struggled with post-partum anxiety. This led to my young family and me moving back to our home state of Michigan. After a circuitous path of surrending my own plans for a career in counseling, God led me to lean into motherhood. I have six children and have homeschooled most of them in some capacity.  Now, I have sensed that the time is right to further my counseling experience and work towards completing limited-licensure requirements so I can practice in Michigan. So that is what led me to Second Story; I am thrilled to be here, and would be honored to walk with you in pursuit of healing and personal growth.

When I am not working, I am reading about anything related to theology, counseling, or homeschooling, and also reading a good mystery thriller. I enjoy music and journaling, and love connecting with friends over coffee and a good meal. I also love traveling and enjoy being active outdoors.

My Approach

My approach centers around the relational connection between the client and therapist, as our dynamic often mirrors dynamics that might be present in your life with others. I believe early relationships are formative in shaping your view of yourself and others. I also believe that we were created as spiritual beings, so I value the opportunity to integrate the Christian faith into therapy, as well. I have a background in spiritual direction, so I enjoy helping clients find practical ways of deepening their intimacy with God.

What you can expect

You can expect a warm, collaborative approach to counseling where your own feelings are heard and valued. I am happy to provide practical exercises to work on outside of session, but I primarily work in-session, attuning to your own emotions and drawing those out in the here-and-now. I desire to let you find your own voice, and in order to support this, I may allow periods of silence in the session in order for your own thoughts and feelings to bubble to the surface. I try to avoid advice-giving and instead work to reflect to you the feelings and values I have heard you express.
