Managing Expectations
I operate through a holistic model that observes three capacities: mind, body, and Spirit. If one area is out of shape, it will likely drag the other areas down with it.
Are you feeling emotionally drained? If so, there is a probability that it is affecting your behavior and self-worth as well. Now, before we get too far along, when I discuss Spiritual functioning, this can mean anything between ‘who am I, and why am I here,’ to what plan does a loving and powerful God have for my life? If you do not operate out of a Spiritual lens, then just disregard this segment--there is enough to navigate when we view the mind and body connection, and maybe you can contemplate the existential later!
Life comes with challenges, and thinking that making it to a certain point in life will eliminate challenges can cause added distress—life is in a state of perpetual change…roll with it!
Now, you may find a season when life remains consistent, but change can rear its head at any moment. Paraphrased, Dave Ramsey (yeah, a financial guy) said it best: it is not a matter of if an emergency will happen, it is a matter of when—be ready. So, ask yourself what lens you would like to operate through, ‘crisis management’ or ‘proactive wellness’?
When we operate out of a crisis management lens, we are constantly putting out fires without taking any steps to prevent the fire from starting.
What areas in your own life can you look into that may help reduce the number of fires in the first place? Almost every individual has the potential and capability to look deeply within themselves and identify areas of growth and how to positively influence those areas. How can you begin to promote wellness today?
