Have you all heard this song? Check it out:  Just Breathe This is a song about darkness, resiliency, and one of the most helpful and versatile coping skills we have — deep breathing.  The song tells the stories of three individuals who are struggling in different ways: first, a friend who is deeply unhappy in a relationship; second, a man who is trapped in the throes of addiction and substance abuse; third, the songwriter who is feeling anxious and vulnerable at the thought of sharing what she’s created.  Three very different stories, one refrain: “Breathe, just breathe.”

The Power of Yoga on Mental Health

In our society, yoga is often considered a beneficial form of exercise and physical health. But, did you know that it is an excellent resource to improve overall mental health as well. Not only are you working on building strength for your physical health but you are building strength and resilience for your mental health. There are several different areas in which yoga can improve overall mental health.

 

  • Deep breathing: Yoga starts and ends with an emphasis on deep breathing while also emphasizing it throughout your practice. You begin by taking deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth by using your diaphragm to get the deepest breath you can. Then as you move through your practice you utilize your Ujjayi breath which requires that you breathe in through your nose and then breathe out without opening your mouth. What Does it Mean to Be Humble

To be humble, to have humility, to have a humbling experience.  It sounds easy and we all say we strive to be this. Biblically we are called to be humble. So why is it so hard for us to admit that we should have this state of mind, let alone try and display this in our daily lives.  

I was reminded of this during the week when a client came up to me and said he was going out for wrestling and asked what he needed to do to be good.  I said humility. We have a saying in this sport that “if you don’t have humility be ready to be humbled”, and this can true for everyday life’s experiences.  Maybe that is why wrestlers can handle so much adversity.  

I guess the question we need to ask ourselves is what do I need to do to be humble, before I am humiliated?  Like I mentioned earlier wrestlers learn from a good butt whipping on the mat, we take that as “what not to do next time experience” and apply ...
